PLIMSHOF Inductee #24
Professor C.G. (Pat) Burke
Deceased

Prof. C.G. Burke & Prof. L. Hilton
Carlton Pat Burke was a very close friend to the Hilton family since 1957. He was a next door neighbor to Prof Larry Hilton's dad when Larry was just a young boy. Larry would watch Mr. Burke training on the banks of the Wabash river near Cayuga,Indiana. Larry's father and Mr. Burke both had built fishing or sporting cabins side by side. He watched as this man appeared to do magic with his body in throwing and locking up the bad guys.( so to speak).

Professor Pat Burke started his self defense career in 1934 at the age of 12. He lived next door to a Japanese family who became a great influence in his life. Young Pat would start learning self defense and mediataion at a very early age.

During World War ll Professor Burke was known as a SDI (Self Defense Instructor). Some of those he taught later became known as the Elite Rangers. In the years to follow after the war Professor Burke would start the very first Judo and Jujitsu school in Vermilion County Illinois.

Back then it was very hard to open a martial art school, mainly because the city fathers thought that it would teach violence and only thugs would want to learn. (WRONG)!

Professor Burke started his first school in what was called the Red Mask Theatre. Some of his students went on to become Law Enforcement officers and FBI agents.

Professor Burke earned Black Belts in Korean Yudo and Kodokan Judo, as well as the CERTIFICATE OF PROFICENCY IN KOREAN SELF DEFENSE. Mr. Burkes Sensei in Korean Self Defense was Dae Shin Kim a 6th dan from Seoul Korea. In 1973 the JuJitsu Black Belt Federation of America awarded him his Masters rank in Oikryu Ju Jjitsu. The Professor would spend the rest of his natural life teaching and helping others learn the art of Self Defense.

He competed in his last judo shiai at the age of 46 and took 1st place in the senior division in Cincinatti Ohio. He instructed Military as well as Civilian Law enforcement groups and the general public. On a more personal level he retired as Chief Jailer from the Vermilion Cty Sheriffs Dept and also from the Railroad.

He was inducted into many Halls of Fame in the martial arts and was one of the most Humble and Respected men I had ever known. He helped shape my life in the martial arts as well as many others. On December 30, in the year 00 this great man passed away.

He was a GRANDMASTER TO SOME, BUT A FRIEND TO ALL!
Larry Hilton and Tad Goble were his two highest ranked students.
This is my story of my Sensei and friend. Thank you for reading it.
